How to Crop PDF Pages

PDFToolShack’s Crop Pages tool uses pdf-lib.js to set the crop box on each PDF page, with a live canvas preview powered by PDF.js. Draw your crop area directly on the page thumbnail, or enter precise margin values in points. Your file is never uploaded to any server.

PDF cropping works by setting the page’s CropBox — a PDF standard that tells viewers which portion of the page to display. The underlying page content is preserved; the crop is non-destructive and can be reversed by any PDF editor that exposes the media box.

Use the page navigation to preview different pages before cropping, and the scope selector to apply your crop to all pages, odd/even pages only, or a specific set of pages.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is PDF cropping permanent?
Not entirely. PDF cropping sets the CropBox, which hides content outside the crop area in viewers. The underlying page content is still technically present. In most PDF viewers the crop is permanent-looking, but a PDF editor can restore the original view by resetting the media box. For truly removing content, you would need to use a redaction tool.
What unit are the margins in?
PDF points (pts). One point equals 1/72 of an inch. A standard A4 page is 595 × 842 pts, and a US Letter page is 612 × 792 pts. If you prefer to think in millimetres, 1mm ≈ 2.83 pts.
Can I crop different pages differently?
Currently one crop setting applies per operation. To crop different pages differently, download the result of the first crop, re-upload it, and apply a second crop to the remaining pages. You can also use the page scope to crop odd and even pages separately — useful for scanned two-sided documents with different margins.
Is my PDF uploaded to a server?
No. Everything runs in your browser using pdf-lib.js and PDF.js. Your file never leaves your device.
Why does my crop look different from the preview?
The preview renders at a scaled resolution for display. The actual crop is applied in PDF points at the page’s native resolution, which may be slightly different from the visual preview. For precise crops, use the margin input fields with exact point values.
Can I remove the white borders from a scanned PDF?
Yes — this is one of the most common uses. Draw the crop rectangle around just the content area of the page, excluding the white scanner border, then apply to all pages. Works well for scanned books and documents.
